The “tree of modes” is the symbol representing the organisation of the Moroccan Arab-Andalus melodic system. Its four branches illustrate the four fundamental sets of sound modes as well as the four humours of the human microcosm. The present recording aspires to reconstitute and re-order the integral architecture of the ancient 24-mode system. Ahmed Shiki, a talented lute player who has also become a lute maker, was born in 1958 in Fes, and grew up within the secret bosom of this Andalus metropolis. His great erudition has enabled him to perform the 11 noubas
